Call & Response: Visions of the Forest After Wildfire

In 2021, The Caldor Fire ignited near South Lake Tahoe. It burned 221,835 acres in the Eldorado National Forest and other areas of the Sierra Nevada. The fire dropped down Echo Summit above our community, and burned both sides of the valley we live in. Our narrow strip of riverside forest was saved by firefighters. Since then, wildfire has been one of the most persistent features of our landscape. I gathered charcoal from the fire, and made drawings with it, as a healing way to process the experience.

A solo exhibition of my work was held at the Haldan Gallery in 2022. I gave presentations to our local community and students about my process and what it means to engage creatively with wildfire. I called the exhibition ‘Call & Response: Visions of the forest after Wildfire’, and donated the proceeds of catalog sales to the Wildland Firefighters Foundation.

Proud supporter of the Wildland Firefighter Foundation

The Wildland Firefighter Foundation’s main focus is to help families of firefighters killed in the line of duty and to assist injured firefighters and their families. We honor and acknowledge past, present, and future members of the wildland firefighting community, and partner with private and interagency organizations to bring recognition to wildland firefighters.

Wildland firefighters represent the diversity of the land they protect.  They are federal, state, and local firefighters, contract firefighters, and volunteers from rural communities and towns across the United States.  Many are long-time career professionals, some much newer to the job. They are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job, a community of committed individuals who work and train to protect our private and public lands.
