River Study 1

This is a plein air study of the Upper Truckee River, near where I live. Sketches like this are an intimate record of the first explorations of pictorial design, noting the patterns of light and dark, underlying rhythms and focal points. The marks are raw and full of energy. They reflect the excitement and curiosity present at the beginning of a painting journey, when any number of potential directions could be taken.
