In the Wings Original

This is an original drawing that I made after the Caldor Fire of 2021, using pastel and charcoal foraged from the burn area near my studio in Christmas Valley. ‘In the Wings’ was created on a heavy weight, archival paper called ‘Stonehenge’, and features a deckled edge. I also used soft pastels in this piece, for the colour.

Local delivery only for framed, as it has conservation glass. I’ll deliver free of charge within 100 miles or so – contact me to discuss.

About the artwork:

One of the things I love most about living in a valley, is the mornings. Our bathroom window faces the east, and I see the light filtering through Jeffrey Pine needles while I brush my teeth. If I squint a little, it looks like butterflies. Across the road in the same direction, is the scene in this drawing. I took the name from a phrase a friend used to describe Christmas Valley after the Caldor Fire – she said that the valley walls were like wings. Burnt wings. Dragonflies have been a recurring theme in my life and work for several years now. In some cultures they represent transformation. A perfect metaphor for the transformation of forest to ash, beginning a new cycle of existence in the endless dance of life.
