This is an original drawing using pastel and my own hand made charcoal from willow salvaged from the riverside near my studio in Christmas Valley. ‘Cousins’ was created on a grey toned archival artist paper, measuring 24 x 18″.
This is a framed original drawing created en plein air, outside. I set up an easel in the forest above Kirkwood, while my family and friends climbed new rocks they’d found. I used soft pastels and charcoal for this piece – a really fun, energetic medium. It’s ideal because you have to work fast outside – the light is changing, the breeze moves the trees, and there’s always the possibility of animals making an appearance.
The intertwined saplings caught my eye first, and the rest of the composition just seemed to fall into place naturally. I look for interesting shapes, and make a thumbnail sketch first to see how they fit together without any detail – like a jigsaw really. I love the spaces between trees, it makes me think of windows or portals to another world. Forests are such magical places.
This price is for a custom black metal framed drawing – however, local delivery only for framed, as it has conservation glass. I’ll deliver free of charge within 100 miles or so – contact me to discuss.
